Spousal Open Work Permits
Marriage to a study-permit or work-permit holder does not automatically establish open work permit eligibility. The principal applicant’s circumstances and the applicable category determine the requirements.
Spouses of international students
Eligibility is limited to specified programs and circumstances. Review the student’s valid status, program and enrolment evidence against current IRCC criteria. Initial applications and extensions may differ.
Spouses of foreign workers
Eligibility can depend on the worker’s occupation, authorization, remaining validity and eligible permanent residence pathway. Categories and exceptions have separate rules.
Family sponsorship applications
Work permits associated with eligible family sponsorship applications form a separate category. A pending sponsorship application alone is not permission to work.
